Ed Note: At the end of each year we here at VanEd determine which of the hundreds of previous posts have impact beyond any one year or any one issue. We select these posts to Rewind, republish and reflect upon. They touch on the concept of generosity and the unwavering spirit our authors, partners, affiliates, students, staff and most of all our families and friends. We share these posts as a reminder of how the most successful people in the industry reach out every day, and hope they give you ideas on how to implement the concepts into your practice in the coming year.
3 Ways to Improve your Health without Changing your Diet or Exercise Plan
1. Get More Sunshine
When exposed to direct sunlight our skin makes Vitamin D, which is critical to the health and functions of our bodies on a cellular level including preventing cancer and infections, improving mood, and reducing inflammation. According to Mark Hyman, MD, the problem is that many of us are spending much of our lives indoors and may not have optimum levels of Vitamin D for health. What a great excuse to hit the beach this summer!
2. Shorten your Work Hours
A recent study of British civil servants suggests that working more than 10 hours a day increases a person's chances of developing heart disease or having a heart attack. A recent report from Human Resource Executive Online details how US experts compare the conditions of this study to environments US employees face everyday.
3. Get Health Insurance Coverage
A brief from Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. details how insurance coverage can positively effect health outcomes. Results show that due to increased access to preventive and screening services, prescription services, access to mental health treatment, continuity of care and other advantages, people with health insurance are enjoying better health than their uninsured counterparts. For those that find themselves without health insurance, a High-Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) combined with a Health Savings Account (HSA) can be an affordable alternative to other types of coverage. The evidence seems to support that some type of health insurance coverage better supports health than no coverage at all. With coverage still available under the Affordable Care Act now may be the time to look at your coverage.
Here's to you and a healthy and prosperous year!
